520 _aTraditional medicine or alternative or complementary medicine includes herbal medicines composed of herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations, and finished herbal products, that contain as active ingredients parts of plants, or other plant materials, or combinations thereof, animal parts and/or minerals may also be used. Traditional medicine has gained wide global acceptance and popularity in disease intervention. The World Health Organization and its member states cooperate to promote the use of traditional medicine for health care. In the Philippines, the government cooperates in the promotion of traditional medicine by including this in its priority areas. There are myriad researches on herbal medicinal plants but the researcher has not encountered researches on the classification of herbal medicinal plants used to treat common skin diseases according to taxon family and phytochemicals present. Likewise, to the researcher's knowledge, there is no existing comprehensive guide to herbal medicinal plants categorized according to common skin diseases treated. Thus, this study aimed to: 1) classify the plants according to skin diseases treated and taxon family, 2) identify the phytochemical constituents that are responsible for the treatment of skin diseases; 3) determine the relationship of the kind of skin disease treated and taxon family and phytochemical constituents; 4) identify the common mode of preparation used; 5) identify the common plant parts utilized in preparing the herbal plants; and 6) develop a comprehensive guide to Philippine herbal medicinal plants according to skin diseases treated. Qualitative descriptive research using content analysis method was employed in the study. The study was conducted from October 2011 to May 2012.
