520 _aThe chemistry teaching laboratory is an important arena for developing or improving students' comprehension of the chemical concepts. But the presence of hazardous chemicals puts them at great risk. The faculty of the chemistry teaching laboratory is the main supervisor in the chemistry laboratory and they are responsible in maintaining safety. This study was conducted to investigate the safety management of chemistry faculty in State Universities not offering (NBSC) and offering (BSC) the BS Chemistry program. Quantitative Cross-sectional Survey Design was used and data were collected using a prepared questionnaire. Three factors were investigated -safety management practices, problems encountered in safety management, and safety training needs. Nine parameters were included in their safety management practices and problems encountered. Results showed that both NBSC and BSC faculty often practiced safety management. Based on their average weighted means, their safety management practices are not significantly different. In the problems they encountered in safety management, the two groups were found to encounter slightly serious problems in safety management. The NBC faculty experienced more serious problems in ER, CSC, and WM compared to BSC faculty. The safety training needs of the faculty are much needed by NBSC faculty and described as needed by BSC faculty. Further, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in the safety management practices between the NBSC and BSC faculty. But, the two groups are found to be significantly different in the problems they encountered in safety management and their training needs.Based on the differences, a Chemistry Safety Manual was developed to introduce common safety guidelines, policies, and protocols in the laboratory. A uniform safety manual establishes sound safety policies in the University's chemistry teaching laboratory. The developed safety manual is recommended to be used as a starting document by the SUs to establish uniform safety policy in the chemistry teaching laboratory. It is also recommended that the chemistry faculty in SUs in Region IlI undergo safety trainings to be more confident in their role as safety managers. Lastly, the findings of this study should be considered by policy makers of the government to realize that there is a need to develop regulatory materials specially designed for the safe management of chemistry teaching laboratories.
